I’m sitting here listening to terrible music, writing worse headlines and wondering where every member of Mike Gundy’s original staff ended up.
Let’s take a look then, I think you’ll find it interesting.
Left Stillwater after 3 seasons to become the head coach at Southern Miss. Lured to North Carolina in 2011. Current: Head Coach University of North Carolina.
Vance Bedford (Defensive Coordinator)
“Moved on” after two years in which he remains memorable for referring to fans as cockroaches. Spent 2007 in Michigan coaching defensive backs, then off to Florida for two years doing the same thing. Current: Defensive Coordinator Louisville
Joe Deforest ( Special Teams)
Wore his hat backwards..which was neat. Also stayed in Stillwater for a decade, famously recruiting Houston and coaching special teams to give up at least one memorable TD return a year. Left Stillwater after the 2011 season for West Virginia and a Defensive Coordinator position. Current: Associate Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator.
Nelson Barnes ( Defensive Line)
Nelson coached defensive line through 2007 for OKState. Not much history is available after he left but I found he was demoted from DC to Defensive Line coach at Port Arthur high school in Texas this past April. So things are going well then.
Joe Wickline (Offensive Line)
STILL HERE BABY! WHOOO!!!!! HOOOOOOO!!!!!! (Camel Voice*) Seriously though, rumored to have refused Mack Brown’s offer that was supposedly irresistible. No word yet on the safety of his horses.
Gunter Brewer (Receivers)
“Billy’s Boy” Spent six seasons in Stillwater leaving after the 2010 season for Ole Miss. Houston Nutt got fired his first year and he was the only staff member asked to stay into the second year. Gunter spent last season in North Carolina with Larry Fedora. Current: Passing Game Coordinator and WR coach at North Carolina.
Curtis Luper- (Running Backs)
Curtis spent four seasons in Stillwater before moving to Auburn in January 2009. Spent three years at Auburn and made the news for some stuff while there. I’m sure it was just there and not at all a cause for concern. Anyways, it’s not important. Don’t Google it. Current: Wide Receivers coach at TCU
Todd Bradford - (Linebackers)
No longer wearing a mustache…or working from what I can tell. Todd spent three years in Stillwater coaching linebackers after getting fired as OC at BYU. Highlights of his time here, as listed on www.RandyEdsall .com include coaching Chris Collins. Coincidentally he was last seen cleaning out his defensive Coordinator office in Maryland. Between those stops he spent three seasons at Southern Miss assisting Larry Fedora.
Doug Meacham (Tight Ends) You’ve read this far. You probably know he’s the offensive coordinator in Houston this season.
So there it is, I know it was long but I enjoyed looking up. Nelson Barnes fascinates me. How a guy went from Nebraska to OkState to….. is probably an interesting story. Not really sure how to wrap these things up yet, so goodbye
